We had the pleasure of flying two families that evening from west Norfolk. The days previous had been quite unsettled, however our forecasters gave us the go for the evening flight. A balloon flight from west Norfolk is totally different from a Norwich flight. We launch from some of the busiest military airspace in Europe, therefore a little more pre planning is necessary. A phone call to range control at Stanford battle area to make sure they’re not live firing! Quite an important phone call that one!!Then a call to R.A.F. Lakenheath and we are ready to go to site. We lifted off at 7.10 p.m. and we in direct radio contact with Lakenheath. The wind on the surface was very slow so we climbed out to 6,000′ ‘up top it was much quicker nearly 30 m.ph. The balloon was soon leaving Norfolk and crossing the Suffolk border.
We crossed over the main railway line from Bury st Edmunds & Diss at 5,000′ with Sizewell, Ipswich dock and in fact all of Suffolk in clear view from the balloon. We landed on a farm track in the parish of Martlesham next to the A140. Another first class adventure.
