This balloon-Ride flight over Peterborough provided panoramic views of the Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire landscape. After a poor summer of weather September has proved to be quite exceptional for ballooning. We launched from the Ken Stimpson field behind Werrington Sports Centre at 4.40 p.m. The city was clearly laid out beneath us. Ferry meadows and Milton Park well defined, to the south Whittlesey and the wind turbines to the north Market Deeping, Tallington lakes and Stamford.
At 2,000 feet we could see the wash running up to the cliffs at Hunstanton in Norfolk and the Lincolnshire coastline up to Boston. The flight took us south of Newborough and Crowland and across Great Postland. The old sea wall could be seen running through Throckenholt where the Dutch engineers drained the last of the Fens in the early 1800’s. For the landing we found a perfect stubble field at Whaplode Drove.
